Grace in the Time of Pandemic

“What no eye has seen, nor ear heard, nor the heart of man imagined, what God has prepared for those who love him.” (1 Corinthians 2:9, ESV)

COVID-19 is not the only novelty! Despite suspensions of SALT trainings across East Asia since January, our God of breakthrough has birthed multiple developments during this quiet season of reflection, evaluation, consolidation and completion of unfinished business.

First off, after months of rigorous review based on field-test results, and in consultation with an independent language expert, Bible Study Skills 2 (BSS2) was finally completed and even made available online. Additionally, Church Foundation 2 (CF2) was launched in April after a lengthy revision process.

Two other projects in the pipeline have continued their steady progress in spite of the pandemic. Since drafting the first four chapters of our new course Book of James at the end of last year, our national trainers wrote another four chapters which are now being edited by the SALT staff. The final four chapters will be presented for review this fall, so that the entire compilation will be ready to roll by mid-2021, Lord-willing.

Our Chinese Church History video course has shown great promise in its trial phase. SALT was invited to conduct this course during the first two quarters of 2020 in a local church but due to social-distancing regulations, in-person training was not possible. To test out another format, we produced eight episodes on video, then sent the links to the students. After our experiment concludes, feedback will help us determine whether or not to proceed with this new teaching method. Initial response has been encouraging, and to our surprise, we discovered a few overseas attendees!

With the easing of the pandemic, our national trainers are planning to gradually reconvene classes. Conditions permitting, one to two sites will re-open this month, but a full resumption is not expected until the latter part of this year. We are grateful to God for guiding and guarding us through these unprecedented times, and for giving us a glimpse of the new things that He has prepared for SALT!
