Exceeding Expectations
Before joining SALT, I knew almost nothing about ministry in East Asia. Yet even as a part-time staff member in the beginning, SALT welcomed me with open arms and offered invaluable learning opportunities. Most notably, I was given the chance to visit the mission field in person, observe the needs firsthand, and live and fellowship with faithful local coworkers. Although the environment was not overtly hostile, there was always a sense of underlying tension—even meetings had to be conducted with caution.
I was deeply moved by the three founders, who had each walked through valleys of exhaustion and depression. Yet they remained unwavering in their commitment to the training ministry, embracing suffering with courage and conviction. The team’s profound emphasis on prayer was rare and deeply reassuring, affirming to me that this was indeed a mission field prepared by God.
Yet the path of service has never been smooth. One vivid memory is of editing my first course, Church Management—SALT’s first localized curriculum developed through oral narration by local coworkers. How could I transform spoken words into practical written teaching materials? And given my limited knowledge and experience, how should I supplement the content? What exactly needed to be added?
At the time, no one could offer guidance, as we all lacked experience in this area. I could only take one step at a time and ask everyone to pray. Yet God miraculously provided me with many relevant reference materials. One moment stands out: while editing a particular lesson, I struggled to create a memory aid outline due to the abundance of key points. Unexpectedly, while reading a newspaper from East Asia, I came across an article containing several phrases that perfectly fit the outline. “God is truly faithful!”
Over the past 18 years, I have participated in the revision or development of 13 courses, experiencing countless instances of God’s marvellous help and provision. Many times, I felt lost and overwhelmed, unsure of how to proceed. Only then did I realize my own limitations and how I had underestimated the complexity of the work. But in His mercy, God always provided—sometimes through a book that was gifted to me, other times through a chance discovery in a church library or elsewhere. And so, one course after another was completed.
I am deeply grateful to Ningo, who worked alongside me for many years. His expertise in editing and illustration greatly complemented my own shortcomings. I also want to thank the coworkers responsible for management and administration. Their extensive experience enabled them to make wise decisions and accomplish critical tasks, allowing the ministry to endure many challenges.
Finally, I want to thank all of you for your faithful support over the years. Because of your partnership, we have been able to walk this journey together. May God continue to bless each of us, making us vessels of His grace—bringing His blessings to many more people. Amen!
(Note: Music is SALT’s senior editor who retired last month after more than 18 years of dedicated service in the curriculum department. Over the years, he not only served diligently but also tirelessly pursued learning, and contributed significantly to training, curriculum development, and caring of coworkers. SALT sincerely wishes him a joyful retirement and prays that he will continue to shine for the Lord in new roles to bless others.)
